Mandi story : ON YUNUS Model

I m delighted to be here ..

The story shared here will be different from the regular stories that you hear for education . It is not only different but diagnoally opposite..That is the same  reason that made you to invite me to be here.

I was a professor at NITIE. Happy job. Illustrious institution,  Big buildings, Good salary. Wonderful students . Intellectually high. Quite interested.. Students are selected out of the genuine screening test . As I worked for 10 years.. As a professor I come across pained me . Felt miserable .. People how come with all these things you are disgusted. How come you alone got disgusted ?  Yes. It is .

I found the students least interested in studies . Studies were most meaningless, and useless and tasteless . This is talked many a times in academic circles. No faculty tried to talk loudly. No faculty tries to address it .

As a  faculty,  I tried some remedies.. This I often see with many faculty try to do .  I tried so many changes.. I have done enough of experiential learning as part of curricular learning. But my thrust has not ended .

The more intensely I was working  for change,  I was getting more horrible results. 

It is happening again and again it is happening in more and much more !  Please note this .. 

I firm on helping my students, in my course at my level for atleast one day  and one time .

I want my life useful and meaningful for me atleast .  I was not looking solution beyond my own /  class / course/ students  and .purview. Hence, I was concerned.

So it struck me.. why not the experiential toys which i m using as part of class room learning can be given to the students and ask them to go out and sell them in the market . so that they learn the subject through practice.. and also they will get remunerated for the work they are doing . It is small and tiny amount . not big money . I was not knowing what will come in future !

My own  education experience has its contribution  for this thinking. I will talk separately of this story  ! 

Students initially were not interested but with little chasing they said YES . The attraction is going out of the class .. Being away from the class ! What a surprise ! One can imagine the allergy they have for the class .

Nearby NGO gave the toys.  It was small amout of educational toys .. may be per student Rs 500 / per day .. It is for one day .. I stand guarantee for the returning. Students sold them. learned and returned, and made some earning .

We gave the name .. M A N D I.. Slogan was.. Soacho ! Becho  ! !

 It was big success. Students started repeating next year  again . This exercise has become annual feature . This program is owned by the students themselves . They design, they organise..  Mandi is not mine but the students  !  and learners  !

With the success of the Mandi I thought my faculty will be interested in it. They also get credit for it.
I went to the faculty and asked their participation .They said no chance.. this is not what is academics! They said NO . I got surprised.. I told them students are liking it. There is less work in it .

M faculty are colleagues are dead against . They are disinterested. they hated it.  They said Mandi is not Acadeic .. it is NON ACADEMIC.!

The solace is.. they said .. If you want to do .. Do it but dont ask us to do  ! ..

They challenged me to do in other colleges, .. I again done in many colleges .. Shared in many colleges .

I started understanding what the reason behind the  success of Mandi ..

REALIZATION - I : There is NO EDUCATION 

REALIZATION  - II  : There is WRONG EDUCATION 

REALIZATION -  III :  There is UNWANTED EDUCATION  

THEN IT STRUCK ME.. SIMPLE ! EUREKA ! IT IS LIKE THIS !

If  something is  done, and it  emerges wrong repeatedly,  It means that ... REVERSE is RIGHT .

You just do reverse then the results will be RIGHT . This is the great insight .

What I was doing in Mandi and what my colleagues are doing are exactly OPPOSITE ! ..

Mandi is liked  and benefited , find useful by the students .. Students still dont like what my colleagues  are doing it . Bust still my colleagues dont leave it . They continue to do it .

Mandi is REVERSE of what conventional academics  does it ! ..

Mandi is .. Out of the class ... X  In class room .

more listening  X More talking

Sitting X Squatting

Learning .. and no doing ... X  First Do and then followed by  Learning

Knowledge is brought and bought  to students......X Students go to  the original source of knowledge and they pick it, and pluck it, process it, understand it and get it .

Fake knowledge , fake customers , all fake X  Everything is ..Real everything is real ..

Life is unauthntic.. psedo  !  X 100 % Authentic.. seen felt, and lived 1

Teachers teach.. Students listen X Doers  talks and non doers listen

Spend and learn .. X Learn and Earn

Drained X Charged up

...  I got most in to  Mandi .. I started doing what my students  LOVE it  .. and  I stopped doing what my students HATE it ! ..

Mandi got awards .. laurels .. published papers .

Conventional  Education is NOT delivering resutls . It is also damaging . It is mostly for rich, elite , and educated.. not for the poor, marginalised, and uneducated.

Education which is mostly used by the rich is not being helpful to rich itself .

Surely it is not for POOR .

Reversed education is useful not only useful for the RICH, but also work for the POOR .

Mandi method of learning is road side method. It is the method of POOR and DOWNTRODDEN.. It is easy for the POOR to do this .

Mandi step by.. step enhanced and emerged in to many other things ..

Student Enterprises are the formal and elongated model of  Mandi learning .


Mindset of educators has not changed . They are the same. They are trained so. They behave the same way. They talk of innovation but they dont innovate ..

TYPES of Education ..

There is only one type of education .. we have..

We have cars differetnt. we have tooth pastes different.. We have GODs different .. What ever type we want we can have Cras, Gods, Toothpastes.. How come education cannot be ?

We have only one type of education ..

For Rich, For intelligentsia , In urban areas,  For  English speaking , Spend first, No returns for quite some time,  Large volume of time need to be spent , Only for with good background .. OK. It is GOOD.

But this does not mean that education for otherwise is not possible ! If education for these people is possible, otherwise is also possible. It is simple..

Current education is not given by GOD !  It is not RULE that  this is the only education one must tread to .. NO.. not needed.. One can have alternate educations . There are as many ways as there are people are ! .. If we have so many GODS, how come we cannot have so many educations ?

Current education  is done by some fellows, some time back ! It can be redone again.. We can have second , third  and fourth type of education which are more suitable to the needs of  people .

We need NEW EDUCATION.. how  it must be ! ..  My wish list for  new education will be..

- It must pay first and take later on !
- It need NO  brains, but hands and legs
- It must be of any time, any where, any how  learning type
- It must be pleasurable, interesting and engaging
- It must be  AASAAN  type  ! AANAND  type !






There is unfishished agenda to CREATE FULL FLEDGED  pedagogy for higher education .

Educated Graduates and Post Gradutes say.. ' We dont have jobs '.

The quesiton that need to be posted is ..  " Who said there are jobs !". They are wrong . Text books are wrong is they said so. Policiticians are wrong if they said so  Parents are wrong if they said so..

Sach he haikhi.. Truth is ..that .... there are no jobs ! 

- Erase and forget your memory that there are jobs .  Act as if there are no jobs. and you are job giver!

- Youth need to be prepared how to prepare for this new situation.. We cam out with a design. We are implementing this for the last 15 yrs.
